This one is a biggie for me. So many people say, “I don’t have time to work out!” “I need memes to wake me up” or “I’m not even on it that long!” You know why you procrastinate with everything? Because you spend too much time on your damn phone! I know, it is addictive. But you’ll have to break that bad habit if you want to get anything done.

First thing in the morning, everyone grabs their phone. Ok, I’ll give you that, you have to grab your phone to turn off your alarm. But then your finger hits the Social Media and boom, by the time you realize, it’s an hour and a half later. I do understand, memes are funny as hell, and usually when you wake up there’s about twenty notifications from friends across every social media platform that you end up looking at before you even brush your teeth.

Break Your Bad Habit

I’ve gotten into the habit of waking up to my alarm, and only checking to see if I’ve received any important messages from my family and that’s it. I’m brushing my teeth in less than a minute. If I sit there and go through all the social media and respond to every message and like every post, I’m never going to get anywhere on time. And one of my pet peeves is always being on time.

Yes, your phone does brighten your morning for a little bit, but sitting there for an hour on your phone is just time wasted on nothing, and if you’re one of those that uses the excuse of not having time for the gym, then you need to rethink your priorities.

If you’re going to spend an hour scrolling through Instagram why don’t you get on the treadmill first? Honestly that’s when I do it. I put my speed on 3.5 and the incline on 10 and climb a damn mountain while scrolling thru my phone.

By the time I’m fed up with looking at everyone’s Gender Reveal and Gender Change pics on Facebook and all the stupid Call Of Duty videos my friends have sent me, I’m sweating, warmed up, and ready to hit the weights.

And its not just that one hour as you wake up, according to a report on Businessnewsdaily.com an average of 5-6 hours daily are spent looking at non-work related content. With the most viewed sites being Social Media Sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube.

Yes…Social Media Addiction is a Thing

Addictioncenter.com states that Social media addiction is a behavioral addiction that is characterized as being overly concerned about social media, driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to or use social media, and devoting so much time and effort to social media that it impairs other important life areas. Prolonged and consistent social media use can lead to:

  • -Depression
  • -Stress
  • -Anxiety
  • -Sleep deficit
  • -Insecurity
  • -Impaired Relationships
  • -Psychological Disorders

Hmm, guess what? Working out helps reduce every single one of those symptoms…Imagine that.

If you don’t believe that it’s a real addiction, try to log out of all your Social Media for a week and see how long it takes before you feel like you’re missing something. Try taking Social Media away from your teenagers after they’ve probably been on it since they were nine years old.

Ask your significant other to remove social media from their phones and see how long before there’s an argument about it. Ok, don’t do that last one, I don’t want to be blamed for someone’s divorce.

The phenomena of Social Media addiction can be largely attributed to the dopamine-inducing social environments that social networking sites provide. Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram produce the same neural circuitry that is caused by gambling and recreational drugs to keep consumers using their products as much as possible. Studies have shown that the constant stream of retweets, likes, and shares from these sites cause the brain’s reward area to trigger the same kind of chemical reaction seen with drugs like Cocaine. In fact, neuroscientists have compared Social Media interaction to a syringe of dopamine being injected straight into the system.

Its almost impossible in today’s world, everyone needs it for one reason or another. Alot of people make money on their Social Media and it’s their main source of income, so its understandable that they are staring at some type of screen all day. I’ve been staring at this damn screen for around 3 hours today. But guess what? I got my workout in early this morning, worked 10 hours and here I am typing away just before bed. That’s just the way it is, but you must MANAGE IT. Don’t let it manage your life.

I do get it, sometimes you get sucked into something that has nothing to do with work. There’s been a few depressing nights I’ve spent hypnotized by Youtube and I found myself watching two guys build a resort and swimming pool using sticks and blocks made of mud. Yeah you know which one I’m talking about. If you don’t know, here it is—> Mr. Heang Update ….and now I’m helping your addiction. Dammit.

Instead of lying there in bed, morning breath and all staring at your phone for an hour, try these tips

1. Disable the Social Media notifications. If someone needs to contact you about something important, they will call or text. Notifications trigger an involuntary response to look at your phone.

2. Remove your Social Media Apps from your home screen. Keep them hidden in a folder out of sight.

3. You could just delete your Social Media all together, unless you use it for work.

4. Find a Screen Free Hobby…How about going to the gym…that’s a good one…

5. Use a separate alarm to wake up in the morning. Or be disciplined enough to ONLY check for important calls/texts.

7. If you absolutely must go thru your Social Media “superset it” with something else. Like walking outside, on the treadmill, or when your trying to hold that 2 minute plank.

8. There are several Apps that limit your Social Media Usage. You just have to be disciplined enough to use it.

Check out USA Today’s full list of Apps that block or limit social media use.

Top 3 Apps to Restrict Social Media:

  • AppBlock– AppBlock is a mobile application that lets you block annoying apps & websites, bringing down your screen time and helping you focus on more important things. An optional “strict mode” locks you out of changing the rules, forcing you to focus on your work or studies.
  • FlipD– Flipd is a time tracking app that encourages you to stay motivated toward your goals. Once you lock certain apps on your phone for a set period of time, there’s no going back. Other apps can be bypassed by restarting your phone, but not Flipd. That helps make it the ultimate distraction stopper.
  • Freedom-Freedom is the app and website blocker for Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, and Chrome, used by over 2,500,000 people to reclaim focus and productivity. Stop being distracted by your phone, tablet or computer – get Freedom.

To Sum It Up…

I’m not saying delete everything, but learn to manage your Social Media time. Break that habit. If you spend hours on the phone and then say you don’t have time to work out, you’re not being honest with yourself, and you’re flat out lying to everyone else.

If you look in the mirror and aren’t happy with what you see, look at the screen time on your phone. Cut your screen time in half and replace that time with a good workout. It takes less than 20 minutes to get a decent high intensity workout in.

If you choose to start off your day with an hour of Instagram and morning breath over a twenty-minute calorie burning session then you’re definitely in the wrong mindset.
